Building Your First Shelter in Windrose: Tips & Tricks

Welcome to the latest WheneverGamer Review! This time, we’re diving into the captivating world of Windrose. Windrose is an incredibly popular, procedurally-generated pirate survival game (formerly known as Crosswind) that features thrilling building, crafting, combat, and ship navigation, and is currently in Early Access. Players must creatively construct their shelter to protect themselves from the harsh elements and pirates lurking in the waters.

Resource Gathering

One of the first quests is to create new sets of clothing, starting with a new pair of boots. It is quick enough to gather the resources needed to craft the clothing table, but it does require being created where there is a roof. Thus, a shelter is required to be built.

Stone and More Stone: Building a Shelter

I realized that there are various options to start your first shelter build, including using fiber, stone, and wood to build foundations, walls, and different roof styles.

To create these needed shelter components, you will be tasked with gathering stone, wood, and fiber. I recommend picking up all the stone on the beachfront and slashing seaweed with your sword to get fiber. You will soon need to venture into the treeline to gather wood and stones. Creating a pickaxe will really help speed up the process.

SHelter Creation

Once you have gathered enough materials you can start building your shelter and I will say the interface is very easy to use. If you have played other survival games the building can sometimes be complex to navigate to and require you to have a special tool of some sort. Windrose does a great job of making it easy to access (via the B) on the keyboard and mouse scrolling to select the proper item to build.

Starting Inventory Slots Are a Bummer

As you gather materials to build your shelter, you will soon run into a full inventory. There are ways to create chests, bags, and storage items within the building menu, and I highly recommend doing so as soon as possible to maximize your gathering efforts.

Look a Shelter!

One of the best parts of a survival game is the ability to create your own houses and mark your presence on the environment. Consider this your first starter home in the game; I recommend not working on it for too long, as focusing on getting it roofed to complete the creation of the Armor and Clothing workshop is the goal. I added some large windows to provide a nice view of the ocean.

Armor And Clothing

I was able to craft my first set of Survivor Boots. I did not have enough resources to continue crafting the full outfit, but it is a start. At night, you will begin to see new creatures joining the beach, which adds opportunities for new resource farming by defeating them. However, be warned: they often have higher defenses and appear in groups. The additional defense you will gain from these, albeit low-level clothes, will be very helpful. The crafting interface, as well as the game user interface in general, is highly efficient and well done.

Recap

I quickly completed many tasks and initial quests in just a few hours of gameplay. The mechanics were intuitive, making it easy to navigate the available options. I found the settings menu, which offered many customization options to improve my experience. Luckily, I wasn’t attacked during this time since I was safe in my shelter and near the fire. I’m excited to keep exploring, discovering new features, and expanding my base while facing upcoming challenges. Stay tuned for more detailed reviews of Windrose as I explore its engaging world and share my experiences with you.
